Discovering Deaf Worlds/Philippine Federation of the Deaf: Lab Visit

May 01, 2013

In May 2013, Dr. Petitto’s Brain and Language Laboratory for Neuroimaging (BL2) was privileged to have both Discovering Deaf Worlds (DDW) and the Philippine Federation of the Deaf (PFD) visit our lab as part of the participation in the cross-cultural capacity building EMPOWER program that was sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ Pro Fellows Division. During the visit, we were pleased to give them our insights by presenting VL2 and BL2 findings to show our support for the international Deaf leaders and to encourage their goal to create a world with equal access to language, education, employment and human rights for Deaf people. They were fascinated by our findings of bilingualism and with our studies, especially with our functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy brain imaging system.
